What’s the benefit of upgrading to a new furnace and/or air conditioner?
First and foremost it’s energy efficiency, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) states that up to 60% of an average home’s energy use goes towards heating and cooling costs.
That is an overwhelming amount of energy. Most people spend most of their focus on turning all the lights off or using cold water when washing their clothes, but heating and cooling should be the first thing you address when improving efficiency.
The IESO also points out some tips like using a programmable thermostat and using a dehumidifier, but what they really think you should do is replace your HVAC system.
That’s why the one thing that provides a real cash incentive is upgrading to a new high efficiency system. If you upgrade your furnace and air conditioner, you’re eligible to receive up to $650 in instant savings.
This is the one thing that can significantly increase your efficiency. The IESO even provides tips and tricks that improve efficiency, such as using a programmable thermostat or having your system serviced (which can increase efficiency by up to 20%), but nothing is incentivized like a system upgrade.
Here is a quick info-graphic that provides a full breakdown of the incentives offered:
